The Nevada State Board of Athletic Trainers Executive Secretary Michelle R. Cothrun shares her organization\u2019s experience.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Can you walk us through your state&#8217;s licensure process for Athletic Trainers (ATs)? What is your typical processing time?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The initial application is a paper form available on our website, though we are transitioning to an online system similar to our renewal process. Licensure requires current Board of Certification (BOC) certification and a fingerprint background check. Applications can be scanned and submitted via email.<\/p>\n<p>Applicants licensed in another state that requires a fingerprint background check can apply for licensure by reciprocity. They must still complete fingerprinting but may receive their license before receiving results. If an applicant has a criminal history that impacts eligibility, they must appear before the board for review.<\/p>\n<p>Once fingerprint results are received, licenses are issued within one to two days. However, the background check process can take several weeks, so early fingerprinting is encouraged. The Nevada Department of Public Safety is developing an online portal to speed up results.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What processes do you use to make athletic training licensure efficient?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To streamline licensure, the board has:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Removed the requirement for notarized applications<\/li>\n<li>Eliminated the need for licensure verification from other states<\/li>\n<li>Encouraged payment of fees by credit card<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What challenges do you face regulating the ATs practicing in your state?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The primary challenge is unlicensed practice, particularly by individuals from neighboring states. To address this issue, the board has hired investigators to lead an educational campaign at tournaments and events that often rely on nurses and EMTs instead of licensed ATs. The investigators will also ensure compliance with Nevada law by verifying that all ATs providing services are properly certified and licensed in the state<\/p>\n<p><strong>How does\/will your state use the BOC as a resource?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The board relies on the BOC for verification of current certification, which is required for licensure and renewals. The state regulations regarding professional practice and the requirements to maintain certification of licensees show that the board adopted the \u201cBOC Standards of Professional Practice.\u201d Additionally, the board utilizes the BOC\u2019s Disciplinary Action Exchange list to track and address any relevant disciplinary actions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"In this series, we present helpful information from regulatory agencies that have made the process of athletic training licensure easy and efficient while still upholding state guidelines.
