Across the U.S., the practice of athletic training is strictly defined and regulated, with many states prohibiting unlicensed individuals from representing themselves as Athletic Trainers (ATs), performing athletic training services or using the ATC\u00ae credential.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s the Problem?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Unlicensed individuals are often employed under titles like &#8220;first aider,&#8221; Code 3.2 requires compliance with all applicable local, state and federal laws and regulations related to athletic training. Violating these standards, whether intentionally or not, can have serious consequences. BOC Candidates should not portray themselves as an AT, use the ATC\u00ae credential, or engage in the practice of athletic training until they have been granted BOC certification and\/or applicable state licensure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Risks of Unlicensed Practice<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Practicing athletic training without a license or certification can result in significant professional and legal repercussions, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Disciplinary Action<\/strong>: Fines or other penalties imposed by state regulatory agencies<\/li>\n<li><strong>Delayed\/Denied Certification<\/strong>: Violations may result in delay of, or potential denial of BOC exam eligibility or further disciplinary action taken by the BOC upon being granted certification<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How Candidates Can Stay Compliant<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To avoid jeopardizing their future as an AT, they should follow these key steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Know the Rules<\/strong>: Familiarize themselves with their state&#8217;s practice act and the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/bocatc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/SOPP-2024.pdf\">BOC Standards of Professional Practice<\/a>.&#8221; Some states offer a temporary license for a limited time period for individuals who are eligible for the BOC exam.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Avoid Misrepresentation<\/strong>: Refrain from portraying themselves as an AT or performing athletic training services unless they&#8217;re licensed and certified<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stay Informed<\/strong>: Visit the <a href=\"http:\/\/bocatc.org\/state-regulation\">BOC State Regulation website<\/a> for detailed information about their state&#8217;s specific laws and requirements<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Unlicensed practice undermines the profession&#8217;s integrity and puts patients&#8217; health and safety at risk.
